Are you going to be taking FMLA or an Unpaid Leave of Absence?

Here are a few things to know about your Insurance.

 

Family Medical Leave Act/California Family Rights Act

Reasons for taking FMLA/CFRA

  • Birth/adoption/foster care placement;
  • Serious health condition of the employee’s child, parent, or spouse;
  • Serious health condition of the employee;
  • Serious illness or injury sustained in the line of duty on active duty by a military service member or veteran who is the spouse, child, parent or next of kin of the employee;
  • Qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that a a spouse, child or parent of the employee is a covered service member on covered active duty or has been notified of an impending call or order to coved active military duty.

What happens to your Insurance?

  • While on FMLA Insurance premiums are not taken from your paycheck.
  • You must pay CUSD directly the regular Insurance premiums.  Click here to see Insurance rate sheets.
  • Premiums are due on your regular payroll dates (Certificated last day of the month, Classified on the 10th of each month.)
  • If you DO NOT return to work from an FMLA leave you will be responsible for the full district cost of insurance for the time you are on leave. 
  • If you DO NOT accept FMLA insurance your coverage will terminate at the end of the month your leave starts. You have 30 days from your return to work to reenroll back into health benefits.

 

Unpaid Leave of Absence

Some reasons for taking an unpaid leave

  • You have exhausted all FMLA time;
  • You have exhausted all time in a PAID status (you have used all sick time, PN, vacation, differential, workers compensation, etc.);
  • Sabbatical;
  • Illness, disability, or injury;
  • Other reasons acceptable to the District.

What happens to your Insurance?

  • Your insurance will terminate at the end of the month you start your unpaid status (Example: last day paid 3-17-16, last day covered 3-31-16)
  • You have the option to purchase insurance while on leave at the full district cost.  Click here to view the options form with current rates.
  • Premiums are due on your regular payroll dates (Certificated last day of the month, Classified on the 10th of each month.)
  • If you DO NOT accept unpaid leave of absence insurance you will have 30 days from your return to work to reenroll back into health benefits.
